About glendabrehm

One of my favorite pastimes is hiking in God’s beautiful creation. Whether it be in the mountains, by the seashore, in the desert, or any other place in nature, being outside draws me close to the Creator. I also enjoy travel in general, sometimes visiting unique towns and historical places.

The Path of the Pelican

Living near a wetlands reserve (in the middle of the country) sure has its advantages for this nature lover! For years these gorgeous but elusive shore birds have been circling our property and, yet, I had not been able to snap a single decent picture. Between the time that I would spot the birds and then go to find my camera, the birds would simply fly away.

But, today was destined to be different…I spotted them TWICE! The first time, I snapped a few lousy pictures with my cell phone, which happened to be with me when I first saw them. While I was attempting to post those pictures…they came back! Hundreds of pelicans gliding lazily through the sky right outside the window behind my computer.

I was ready this time…camera in action. I must have snapped 50 photos. They might not be the best, but one can definitely see that they are pelicans!

This picture is photo-shopped. I wanted to express in this photo the joy I felt while chasing down these amazing creatures.

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”

The Path of a River

She meanders through the wilderness, carving a path for exploration. In 1804 Lewis and Clark and company took advantage of this natural trail and paddled up the Missouri River, using the mighty water as a navigation tool to explore a large chunk of The Louisiana Purchase. During this adventure, Clark noticed the high bluff overlooking the Missouri and later in 1808 suggested it as a spot for what became known as Fort Osage.

JANUARY’s Path….

FORT OSAGE, MISSOURI

My husband is in the middle of reading “Fort Osage,” a wonderful used book that was recently loaned out to him. He requested a trip to see the fort in person, and since it’s only a few hours from our home we ventured out. It has been awhile since I’ve wandered anywhere, but I had such a good time yesterday that I’d like to discover other paths that Missouri has to offer. My goal is explore a new path–whether historical or natural–each month during the year of 2021.

Enjoy the descriptions and pictures of Fort Osage, Missouri!

Some fun pictures of the fort and inside some of the buildings.

Thank you for stopping by and may your trails in 2021 be happy ones!

Meandering along the Cold Springs Nature Trail, Picture #3

From the Archives… Path along the Cold Springs Nature Trail in Sequoia National Park.

Paths to Adventure & Praise

It’s always fun meeting new people on the trail. These two ladies were the only other ones we saw the morning my husband and I hiked the Cold Springs Nature Trail. We took turns passing each other while pausing every so often to gaze upon the beauty of nature.DSC_0048

Never the Same Route Twice!

Exploring from your home

What is there to do during the winter months when exploration and personal travel is limited? Watch a DVD about exploration, of course!

At least that is what I decided to do during these past months. The Great Courses (formerly known as The Teaching Company) has produced a series on “History’s Greatest Voyages of Exploration.”

I absolutely LOVED this series. Some explorers were familiar, while others were brand new to me. Even the well-known ones were discussed in such a manner that I learned some new and interesting things about them.

Twenty-four explorers are mentioned. Here are just a few of them.

  • The Scientific Voyage of Pytheas the Greek
  • Xuanzang’s Journey to the West
  • Alexander von Humboldt–Explorer Genius
  • Ida Pfeiffer–Victorian Extreme Traveler
  • Ibn Battuta–Never the Same Route Twice
  • Henry Hudson–Death on the Ice
  • Dr Livingstone and Mary Kingsley in Africa
  • Antartic Rivalries

A course book is also included.

My favorite phrase of the series, “Never the same route twice,” keeps echoing in my head. During the course of your life, what have been some of your favorite routes?

Happy Exploring!

Creation Illustrated, Fall 2019 Edition

dsc_0145Recently, my outdoor experience at Great Basin National Park was published in the Fall edition of Creation Illustrated.

Never heard of Great Basin National Park? That’s probably because it is one of the least explored national parks in the United States. Its location is pretty remote, too. Tucked into the eastern corner of the state of Nevada, it’s an oasis that falls right smack in the middle of the arid, dusty and parched land called the Great Basin–thus the name.

Although there are many outdoorsy things to do at this park, I was drawn to it because of the bristlecone pine trees, the world’s oldest living trees. I wanted to see these sculpted, gnarled trees for myself–touch them and experience for a brief moment their enduring strength amidst all sorts of severe weather-related adversity.

So, check out Creation Illustrated! Not only to read about Great Basin National Park and its treasure of trees, but also because…

  • Readers call Creation Illustrated, “The Christian answer to National Geographic!”
  • It helps you slow down, behold, and become changed by the wonders of God’s creation.
  • You can share the peace that passes all understanding with those you care most about.
  • Each issue contains character building lessons with an eternal impact from the hand of the Creator.
  • Creation Illustrated uses Christ’s method of teaching eternal truths through the things He made.

Identify this Bird!

This evening—while flipping through some photos my father took when visiting the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Florida, a few years ago—I stumbled across this wonderful picture of this beautiful bird.

I have to confess, I don’t know much about birds, especially shore birds. If anyone can help me decipher what kind of amazing creature this is, I would love to know.

The Migration Path

Two weeks ago my father passed away, suddenly. He had been sick, but his death was sudden.

A few days earlier, he had pointed out to me the snow geese that were flying in a nearby field. They were migrating to a warmer, better climate to ride out the barren, cold winter. What a beautiful site it was to behold!

Reflecting upon the phenomena of migrating geese, I am struck by the similarity of my father’s passing. Like the geese, my father’s soul has followed the path of migration and moved on. On past the ugliness of this world and the suffering he endured. On to unending joy and peace in the arms of his Savior.

Throwback to Burney Falls

THROWBACK to 2014: Burney Falls

This picture of Burney Falls taken at McArthur-Burney State Park in Northern California is still one of my favorites.

Among the prettiest waterfalls I’ve ever seen, this constant flowing stream of water reminds me to focus on those blessings!

Blog Design Business

Sharing this for a Fellow Blogger. I have purchased a button for my blog from Maddy before and have been very happy with it. Maddy is a talented young lady and her photos are amazing!

Hello everyone! I hope that everyone is having a great Memorial Day. 🙂 Today, I have some exciting news to share!

I have decided to open up a blog designing business! I have enjoyed designing blogs for years now and have been able to help many bloggers with their blogs. It’s something I really enjoy doing and I’m very excited to start this business. Since I’m just started out with this, my prices aren’t that high and I’m only going to be focusing on blog buttons and headers. ( You can either buy them separately or together. ) As the business grows I may extend what I offer to design. 🙂

If you are looking for a blog button or wanting a new look on your blog, I’d love to help you! Click this link to get more details + place an order!

Are you looking for a new design?…
