The Cat Haven Path

For something fun and different, my husband and I visited the Project Survival’s Cat Haven in Dunlap, California. This sanctuary for endangered wild cats is found in the foothills right before the entrance to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks off the Hwy 180 entrance, near Fresno.

Watch out for Big Foot!

Jet

Immediately we were greeted with a sign and a bit of humor. BIGFOOT! Ha! Ha!

About the cats…

Jet was the newest addition to this haven for cats. He is a young leopard. I asked, “What about his spots?” The docent leading our tour replied, “He has spots.” I looked again and sure enough they were there. Faded blacks spots sprinkled his jet black coat.

Snow Leopard

This beautiful snow leopard doesn’t necessarily need to live in snow. Each animal has a built-in insulator that adapts to fluctuating temperatures. So, even despite the warm California foothills weather, they fit right in!

These two stunning jaguars are TWIN BROTHERS! When they saw our docent, they rushed to the edge of the cage to greet her! She explained that someone else had raised them, but they know her too. She is like the aunt that comes to visit every once in awhile and that is why they get so excited. Jaguars were once native to California.

The white tiger, Diana, and the Bengal Tiger, Kong, are housed in separate compartments, and are intermittently let loose into a grassy area that houses a swimming pond. Tigers love to swim! And, they can swim great distances, too. In the wild, they are known to swim from island to island. Kong is a senior now and doesn’t swim very much. He spends most of his time sleeping.

Among many other cats that we saw were: a mountain lion, an Eurasian Lynx,  and of course, the King of the Beast!  For more information about Project Survival’s Cat Haven, visit their website at: https://cathaven.com.

Deserts & Silver Mines

The desert swallows me every time I travel through it. The enormity of it never ceases to amaze me.

DSC_0103This snapshot of the abandoned silver mine town of Calico, California, is located in the Mojave Desert near Barstow. Tucked into the Mojave’s barren hills, it is now a popular tourist attraction. I really like this picture because it speaks to me of just how immense the desert truly is. (That’s me in the far right corner. Notice how small I am compared to the landscape.) Incidentally, The Mojave Desert is only a fraction of the land mass known as the Great Basin.

Imagine driving through this vastness for hours. Then, imagine traveling by foot as many did in the 1800s.

I paired this picture with this particular Proverb because of the history that seems to follow the mining towns–A history of lawlessness. Of the three mines that I have visited, the saloons outnumbered the churches by a huge margin.

Regardless, the abandoned mines, as well as the desert of the American west, fascinate me.  Perhaps, it is because I never saw either one until I was an adult.

To more adventures!

A Time to Ponder

With the ocean on one side and mountains on the other, this boardwalk made for a perfect path in which to do some pondering! This picture was taken in the evening as the sun was setting upon the Pacific Ocean along the central California coast.

God is Our Refuge & Strength

A walk along Moonstone Beach near the little seaside town of Cambria—tucked in among the mountains of the Central California Coast—provided my husband and I with plenty of photo opportunities. Here is a picture of some seals resting amid the waves, which repeatedly crashed against the rocks. The way these animals seem so oblivious to the constant water spray reminded me of the verses in Psalms that I have attached to this picture.

Meandering along the Cold Springs Nature Trail, Picture #3

It’s always fun meeting new people on the trail. These two ladies were the only other ones we saw the morning my husband and I hiked the Cold Springs Nature Trail. We took turns passing each other while pausing every so often to gaze upon the beauty of nature.DSC_0048

My favorite picture of the week is from “Lee’s Birdwatching Adventures Plus” blog. What an AWESOME shot!
